We've had the Sony MDR-1RNC noise cancelling over-ear headphones in the Pocket-lint offices for weeks now and have been using them non-stop - while at work, when commuting, out on the streets and at home. We already had a lot of love to give to the baby of the range, the similar-named MDR-1R model, but can the top-spec noise cancelling model - with its eye-watering £449 recommended retail price - closer to £330 in the real world - deliver the goods a step above?

When a company sticks its neck out to brand its headphones as "prestigious" it's got to be pretty confident that they deliver in both the style and sound departments. The Sony MDR-1R over-ear headphones sure do look suave in their brown and silver makeup, but they also carry a whopping £300 price tag on the Sony Store. Are the MDR-1R over-ears able to deliver on their prestigious promise?

The Sony MDR-ZX600 is a set of on-ear headphones. They pick-up on some of the style points of the DJ-specific and more highly specified MDR-V55 headphones we reviewed recently, but arrive at a surprisingly affordable price point.

The kind of headphones that come boxed up with iPods and other devices are, in general, awful. They don’t do their respective devices justice, leak audio, but more importantly they don’t do your listening experience - or your eardrums - justice either.

Thanks largely to a certain brand of celebrity-endorsed headphones, wearing proper headphones in the street is now socially acceptable. The Sony MDR-V55 offer themselves up as "DJ style" so, as Sony puts it, you can take your tracks to the street. 

We all like noise when it comes to headphones. But only the noise coming out of our earbuds, we've no time for ghastly outside noise such as traffic, noisy commuters and helpful people shouting at us when we're about to walk into a lamp-post.

Sony has set its sights on Bose with a new pair of noise cancelling headphones - the MDR-NC50, but can the cans promise to give you a slice of silence?

The flagship model of the range, the MDR-NC50 headphones are Sony's top of the range model and come in at £145 making them £100 cheaper than Bose's QuietNoise sets but over £100 more than Creative's Noise Cancelling HN-700 set.

Out of the packaging and the headphones are typical of any noise cancelling set we've seen. Big padded cans to cover your ears and an over the head strap to keep them on your noggin.

Sony promise that the NC50's will reduce ambient sound by around 14dB and cleaning up 4/5 of the background noise.

However in our tests while performing well to reduce ambient noise they didn't perform as well as either the Creative or Bose models we've tested in the past.

That's not to say that sound wasn't reduced, far from it, and to prove that they are working Sony even include a monitor button that you can press to prove to yourself that the room is quieter with them on that off.

It is just we could still hear people talking and other noises fairly clearly when we tested them on the train, around the house and in the office.

The NC50s also come with a standard stereo jack and a dual jack in-flight plug for enjoying in-flight music services.
